Again JOPO & Ingeborg Poffet create a "music-video-Art-project",
which leads even more into spheres of the unconcious experiences
as the formally projects out of 21 years of common work. The
project is based on origianl medical recordings, such as sonography
and doubled-sonography, which are electronically modified, both
visually and audi-tracks. They put own compositions for horn,
bassclarinet, accordion, voice and the vietnamese dan bàu
on top of the electronics of heart-beat-modifications and realize
subtile transformation. The fascination "human
body" is confrontated with "technical possibilities".
Nature and technics combine as a unique or as components that
exclude each other.
Three beamers with different projections-screens and the sounds
dive the room into a surreal conglomerate of divers impressions
and prenatal experiences.
Kidnapped into the world of the inner of the body the
audience will be witness as well as a part of a phantastic travel
through blood-vessels and intracorporal operations, which seem
to be familiar and strange same time. They are placed as part
of the cellular membrane or as the nucleus. Two main story-boards
(and even a small side-story) profile the live-performance:
episodes of the beiings of the human body, physically and pathologically,
and the biggest wonder in universe: the starting of life. The
show triggers emotions, lures, seduces, amuses ...

To
live with technics and nature, does it work together or against
it?
Where does the technic starts in the physically
everyday (teeth!), in music (overdubs with acoustic instruments
up to computer-generated music), where starts the cyborg, what
is still human, what means humanize or humanoise? Noise
as sound (Cage) …
The heartbeat as the main-sound in our life
and it's the basic of “opsonization” - which is a
procedure in the immunology,
to mark a cell as “strange, to delete” for the macrophages.
In “opsonization”
there are just original medical recordings of sonographies, angiographies
and others being used as basic for sound and visuals. |
... The listener may
fload in theses soundworlds, like in the stream of sonographic-pictures.
Electronical effects or curious instruments like the vietname
dan bàu with its special sounds work for themselves.
The interaction of music and pictures appear clever devised.
It's very sympathic that the trio celebrates the halluzinogene
trip thorugh the bodyworlds with a wink. It's
not just because they perform in white doctors white coats,
but the whole performance plays with funny elements. All in
all it's a consequent as well as quaintly implemented travel

Program-notes of the music-video-Art-project:
opsonization
The acoustic base of opsonization is the heartbeat of Ingeborg Poffet,
recorded with double-sonographics by Dr. med. Daniel Müller, which
have been electronically modified by JOPO. Also the visuals are made
of the recordings with sonographic (by Dr. med. Daniel Müller)
as well as x-rays, computer-tomography, magnet-resonance-tomography,
laryngoscopes, cuts of histology and animations, modified and animated
by JOPO & Ingeborg Poffet.

1. bloodstream –soul
of the body
First the vietnamese dan bàu represents
the branching of the arterials, later the measure for augmentation
and diminution of the regulation for the blood pressure. The saxophone
starts to play, when the finest ramification of the capillaries
are visible, where it is too tight for a float, so the erythrocytes
have to wait “in cue” for the exchange of gas and
squeeze through just one by one.
The blood ensures the providing of all organs with nutritive substances
and oxygen. In the never ending circulation the heart is pumping
5 to 6 liters of blood in each single minute through the human
body - in the state of rest, in demand even more. |

2. countdown to colon –
the enharmonically digestion
The trumpet symbolizes a piece of apple,
which starts the way to digestion. The accordion and bass clarinet
both symbolize the endless escapades of the meters of the gastrointestinal
tract. "The enharmonic confusion" musically means the
using of the same note in the well tempered tuning like g-sharp
and a-flat, here it's a word-play specified by the changement
of molecular structures, which stays the same but changes the
form and surrounding.

3. ready for take off: getting off of the boys
Catapulted at the portal of the cervix the entrance has to be
found and penetrated, which is possible only during three days
because of the closing attribute of the cervical mucus.
|
|
4. crepitatio – odem of
life
"Crepitatio" is a creasing sound
which is hearable in case of sickness during the auscultation
of the lungs with the stethoscope. Air is life.
The trumpet is shown by the inlay-film, the bassclarinet by the
big one. The larynx of an amateur, which suffers of functional
dysphonic, is underlaid the singing larynx of Ingeborg Poffet.
It’s shown by the surrounding sound which correlates with
the aspect of bad respiration.
The respiration itself is shown in the x-rays of a diaphragm,
the laryngoscope passes over fluently to an endoscopy of the bronchial
tree.

5. the story about the claps
to my heart
Flap-sounds from the bass clarinet, accordion
and horn symbolize the rhythmically movements of all valves of
the heart. Mechanically, never the same, normally perfectly synchronized
to each other, sometimes developing to arrhythmias, coming back
to an organized rhythm, always in a pulse.
The valve-system of the heart, “announced” by the
tricuspid-valve, played by the bass clarinet, conducts the way
of the blood to the heart, lungs and the circuit through the body.
But sometimes the telling is about errors, delusion, confusion,
windings, shunts, whirls ... and about the metaphorical access
to the heart of course.

6. way to Nirvana – sperm-run

With fresh energy the boys start their
breathless way, but the entrance through the portal has to be
fighted and worked for.
|
|
7. Epi Lepsia
An epileptic person never knows, when
the next seizure will come. But many people can feel it coming
because of the aura in advance. The synapses, which happily do
their jobs before, suddenly start to fire more and more synchronically
until unison: but that fore the brain is not meant to be, it brakes
down to a 10 to 30 seconds of absence and/or a spasm, wherein
the epileptic person looses consciousness.
The trumpet and accordion symbolize the normal ground activity
of the synapses in both hemispheres. After 10 to 20 seconds of
absences they start to play, getting to a stronger activity and
finally playing a seizure in fortissimo. The base for this composition
is an original recording of an electro-encephalography of the
brain of a 15-year-old boy during a seizure. Samples of heart
tones are playing the calm phase, a harder activity with starting
of the aura, tachycardia during the seizure, deep breathing sounds
of calmness with a slow pulse after an absence.
Histology exams of diverse nerves are the base of self-made animations
with the pictures of a computer-tomography from the head of Ingeborg
Poffet. The film shows the development of an epileptic seizure
finally ending in a glissandi of pictures of the brain as the
highlight.

8. Arie of the larynx
This is the lucky story of a big success
of the vocal chords, shown and talked by witnesses of first hand,
the larynx. It’s been sung a cappella, the visual multiplying
get its musically pendant in the voice-life, a special vocoder
for the voice. The sound like water or applause is the electronically
modiefd heartbeat from Ingeborg Poffet, recorded with double-sonography.
The basis is a laryngoscope of Ingeborg Poffet.

Even a sperm sometimes might loose the
orientation.
|

10. Vertigo goes Morbus Menière
Scene of crime: inner ear. Fluids of the
cochlea are stretching the hear-membrane until it cuts, which
means a loss of faculty of hearing and a strong vertigo.
In the cochlea endolymph from the scala timpani mixes with the
perilymphe of the ductus cochlearis because of a strong income
of sodium. That stretches the Reissner-membrane until it breaks.
The cilia of the corti-organ, which ends at the membrana tectoria
(to register finest movements of a single hydrogen-atom, the reason,
why we are able to hear softest notes and sounds) and directs
to a nerve of the nervus vestibulocochlearis, the VIII. brain
nerve, for one special frequency, but then drag into an emptiness
– they can’t fulfill their job, the human is def for
this special frequency. |

11. Bones in space
Since the beginning of space-shuttles
with humans in the sixties science knows about the osteoporoses
of the astronauts. Because of the absence of gravity and everyday-movements
the mass of bones diminishes continuously. Calcium is released,
osteoclasts work harder to catabolize the bones than osteoblasts
can build it up.
The rigid composition is a mirror of the stereotype construction
of the bones with spongosia and corticalis. The accordion stands
for the strength of the corticalis of the lower limps below the
hip, which continuously diminishes in space more and more with
a climax up to the heel bone. The saxophone represents the thorax,
which stays nearly untouched like the radius. The horn symbolizes
the head, which even wins a little bit of mass – because
of the flowing minerals of the other bones in the blood.
X-rays show the begin of the journey into space, like astronauts
are measured before and after a travel. First everything is at
its place, but soon there are changing’s in the femur, knee
and tibialis – shown in some cat-scans. The thorax stays
quiet a time untouched and represents the perfect stay in space:
moons are rising , and suddenly you don’t feel like in a
body any more but in space, while the thickness of the lower bones
is in a free fall.

Later the searching trip leads through
the tubes to the egg-cell, which tempts with pheromones, the sperms
can smell! They are supported by spiral slimes from the uterus
during the fertile time. But the rivals have to be excelled, just
the strongest will arrive.

13. aortas nieces and nephrews
With the aorta the big circulation starts
through the body, brunching-offs lead to vessels always getting
smaller, until the capillaries reduce the blood-pressure down
to 10 percent, for the gas-exchange of oxygen and carbodioxid
might happen in the slowest tempo. In the film the way leads to
the nephrons of the right kidney (of Ingeborg Poffet) where the
blood is filtered.
The composition is programmatically: the soloists stand for the
enriched blood with metabolism-products which cry out like: “hei,
I got to be transported”, so it is caught and “taken”
by tutti-themes. The return of the themes refer to the nearly
same construction of the vessels and their bifurcations.

If a sperm would have the height of a
human, a man would have to swim through honey to measure the achievement
of the slip of a sperm to reach his goal, the ovum.

15. get rid of the demons
This composition is written in 11/4, the
thorax has a cut of 140 tomography-pictures. The figures inside
– like in a Rorschach-ink-picture – are telling the
story of the expulsion of the demons and the conquest of cancer,
including a happy end.

might be only one!

17. contanimation for opsonization
A fatale art-virus, created by the team
Miller-Poffet-Poffet, released during the performance of “opsonization”.
Like a retrovirus it mutates extremely fast, the receptors on
its surface change faster than its rate of a dizzy reproduction.
Everybody will be contanimated, the time of incubation is 7 minutes.
The audience is in quarantine, enjoy the bar. A doctor is ready
for your needs (sometimes).

18. the conjunction
Reached. But keen competition is already
there. Just a single head can slip through the cover, which closes
impenetrable within parts of a second.
|
|
19. the incarnation of Anika
She is back! The rubato-theme accompanies
the way of the freshly conjuncted oöcyte, which moves while
dividing through the tube to the uterus. Entered there the heartbeat
changes and the theme of life starts.
First there is the will of incarnation which needs a fertilized
egg-cell. Once implanted in regular order, sonographic-pictures
show the development of Anika, from a tiny embryo with a visible
heartbeat to a baby, which luckily wags for the completion.
The journey through the body has come to an end, a new being has
been created.

During the live-performance two parallel
storylines are shown: episodes from different conditions of the body,
partly healthy (physiological) and partly with pathological changes.
More over that the biggest wonder in the universe, the genesis of life,
is told. All can be (modified) shown through modern technics.
Also a tiny side-story is there, a love-story of the abdomen, shown
in the blacks between the scenes, two aortas fall in love together.
Only their reproduction is used as base for the art-virus in the scene
17 of contanimation, so the audience is witness of the production and
the outspread of an art-virus (that's why it is cont-animated while
being contaminated).
The theme:
Opsonization is a mechanism of the immunsystem of higher living beings.
During the opsonization the surface of strange cellulars or strange
beings, that have entered the body, will be covered with antibodies
and factors of the complement-system (C1-9), detected because of their
design of antigenes. That's why the foreign cells can be discovered
and eaten by the phagocytes. The numerous antibodies on the surface
of the foreign body help to proceed the phagocytosis, wherein the foreign
bodies are eaten up and dissolve. Receptors on the surface of the cellular
membrane of the phagocytes dock to the antibodies and bring more receptors
near the foreign cellular membrane, which is soon completely covered
by the phagocytes.
Also we track down musically motives, mark and
loop them, assimilate, work through and dissolve them (the musically
phagozytosis). We work with sounds like the audio-double-sonographie,
which we use as base for the music-concept, acoustically isntruments
llike saxophone, trombone/trumpet, accordion, voice, dan bàu
and electronics, computers and sampler.
We lure to certain expections which take unexpeted
exits. Visually these ways are supported by travels into cellular structures
and regions.
The
roon-construction for the live-performance is like the cell: the audience
is placed as part of the cellular membrane on chairs, but there are
also about eleven nucleus places to lay down in the middle. The situation
is perfectly integrated in the set up with three beamers, three screens,
objects, musicians, loudspeakers and familiar heartbeats and heartsounds,
reaching the perfectly strange feeling of being inside a human body
...
Visually basics are original recordings
of the medical technics:
sonographie-videos, MRI-pictures, CTs (computer-tomographie-recordings),
x-rays, cuts of histologies, which has been digitally edited and modified..
acoustic basics for the tapes are:
double-sonographie-recordings from different parts of the body, auscultation-recordings
from the heart and the lung.

JOPO
& Ingeborg Poffet are world-wide known as Duo
fatale. In the Duo they play regularly on big int. festival-stages
as well as in small club-concerts or filmmusic-studios. They work with
electronic, are producers and create nonstop new formations, compositions,
concepts, multi-media-events, cds, dvds, printmedias and other projects.
They have won different prices Jugend Musiziert
(several 1. prices for Ingeborg Poffet, accordion); 2. price Kunstkredit
Basel (1990), special price of the Alexander-Clavel-Stiftung Riehen
(1992), 1. price Marguerite de Reding 2001, improvisation, for Ingeborg
Poffet (with Stefan Baumann & A. Isler), 1. price Swiss Music Composition
Contest 2009, for Ingeborg Poffet, swiss syntharp competition 2010/2011
for both of them.
JOPO studied jazz
on the altosax, later the bass clarinet. He was leadingf several modern
jazz-formations and improvisation-ensembles, giving concerts with David
Moss, Mani Neumeier, Peter Warren, Doug Hammond, John King, Pt. Arjun
Shejwal and others. He's been soloist for different projects (F'orchestra,
Peter Kleindienst Quartett), filmmusic-recordings for D.Detwiler/R.Schneider.
Since 1983 he teaches saxophone, leads workshops and since 2000 he is
leading the group “Halbtax In The House” together with Roberto
dos Santos at the Musikwerkstatt Basel, where he is responsible for
growing up and business as associate.
Ingeborg Poffet
mainly accordeon, voice, composition, started to play several instruments
and to sing at a very young age. She gave her first accordeon-concert
at the age of four. She played classical and contemporary concerts both
as a member of various orchestras and as a free lancer. Until '87 she
took part at many training-colleges for concert-accordeon with Hugo
Noth, Mie Miki-Schenck, Guido Wagner, Elsbeth Moser a.o. From 84 to
86 she studied computer music with Clarence Barlow at the Musikhochschule
Cologne (Germany) and worked on different computer-music-projectsin
Hamburg and Basel (at the Electronical Studio Musikakademie Basel with
Thomas Kessler) and as free-lancer sound-engineer (for Ensemble IGNM
Basel, Serena Wey, actress a.o.). Since 1979 member of various groups,
and acoordion-player for THeater Basel and filmmusics from Niki Reiser
and Daniel Dettwiler. She works with electronic, realizes computermusic
and works as a recording engeneer and producer. She is creating new
formations (together with her husband JOPO) and projects, compositions,
concepts, multi-media-events and projects all the time. Sine 2007 she
has developed several music-booklets for students (music-sudokus for
kids and adults, beginners and players), released on AUGEMUS Musikverlag.
She teaches concert-accordeon , theorie, voice and improvisation and

adviser, actress and piano teacher. Regularly projects with theater
and music-theatre at schools and music-schools.
Denis Beuret, basstrombone,
electronic, composition, is established as composer as well as trombone-player.
He plays solos but also works in formations with contemporary music,
electro-acoustic-music, improvised music and Jazz in Europe and Asia
with renowned musicians. He created more than 140 compositions and worked
on many cd-productions. Looking for new trombone-sounds he has specialized
on expanded techniques of playing his instrument, integrated live-electronic,
musically programming and music-informatics. Beuret has developed a
bass-trombone with special senses, that for he is able to control musically
computer-programs with sonds and moves. Denis Beuret is living in Semsales,
Switzerland. He is involved in cultural-politics, such as cultural-minister
of Switzerland (2010-2011), leader of the New Association Creations
and director of the annual Patchwork-Festival in Délémont.
